¼ tsp well-crushed mastic (found in Greek or Middle Eastern grocery stores)

1. Remove the stems and chop up the figs.
2. Boil the sugar and lemon in water . Use only enough water to dissolve the sugar.
3. Carefully stir to dissolve the sugar as the water is boiling.
4. Add the figs, simmer and stir constantly until the figs are soft with the consistency of syrup (about 20 minutes).
5. Add anise seed, sesame seeds and walnuts, and simmer for three minutes.
6. Remove from heat, add mastic and thoroughly mix it in with the fig mixture .
7. If preserving, pour into clean sterile glass jar, seal immediately and follow proper procedures for canning.
